Tucsonans For Quality of Life

Why do you live in Tucson? Chances are you and your family or business are located here for the climate that allows you to enjoy the outdoors. Blue skies, clean air, and sunny days make Tucson an attractive place to live.

Unfortunately, the high quality of life that we enjoy is being threatened by the overflights at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. D-M uses the airspace over Tucson as training grounds for A-10s, C-130s, AJ-16 helicopters, and F class fighter jets. Noise from these aircraft can be heard at all hours of the day

or night and is increasing. The base has plans to double the number of daily flight operations, replace the A-10 with the much louder Joint Strike Fighter, and launch many more flights at night (draft DM Joint Land Use Study, December 2003).

Military activities near Tucson's dense urban center are not environmentally, socially, or economically sound. Increased noise levels, air pollution, and risk of aircraft crash are all factors negatively affecting the quality of life of Tucsonans by D-M's activities. The military needs to train but they also need to mitigate the negative impacts to the rest of the community. The Governor's plan to financially compensate those impacted is a good-will effort but is not realistic.
