Citizens want Davis-Monthan Air Force Base flights moved away from city. Plan to monitor noise & altitude compliance, impact policy and BRACC.
TUCSON – Concerned citizens from 13 Tucson area neighborhoods strategized last night at the first Tucsonans for Quality-of-Life (TQL) organizational meeting to improve quality-of-life issues relating to Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (DM).
DM’s Joint Land Use Study calls for a doubling of flights over Tucson, using louder aircraft, more routes, and more night flights.
Tucsonans for Quality-of-Life is an important new voice for reform of DM's harmful impacts to the community, including safety, property values, schools, noise, air pollution and other issues. The group plans influence policy and participate in the Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRACC) process now underway through 2005.
TQL is considering a citizens' noise monitoring program, where citizens across the city would use sound meters to gather and record noise data. TQL is also considering similar monitoring of DM flight compliance with minimum altitude limits.
TQL wants DM to move flights away from the city, especially older neighborhoods in the central city that pre-date the base. TQL is not calling for DM to close, at this time.
Past crashes of DM-based aircraft have killed people on-the-ground in Tucson, and Air Force records show over 33 DM-based aircraft have crashed in the last decade.
TQL will hold its next meeting Wednesday, May 19, 6:30pm at the Armory Park Center, 220 S. 5th Ave, downtown.
